Everyone Likes Peanut Butter Right?

29-Jan-2009

.... well almost everyone. It was our childhood comfort food, something that goes along well with jelly. Not only can you spread it on bread you can spread it on crackers, celery, scoop it out of the jar with a spoon or if you dare - your finger.

As I was waiting in the super market checkout line two ladies nearby were discussing the recall of Peanut Butter. Suddenly a man popped his head up from the newspaper he had in his hand and said, "When was there a Peanut Butter recall?"

Mold and Roaches Found in Peanut Butter Plant Linked to Salmonella

peanutIn case the salmonella outbreak tied to tainted peanut butter hasnâeTMt grossed you out yet, we have some new disgusting developments: Federal inspectors found mold, roaches and a leaking roof at the Georgia peanut factory, Dow Jones Newswires reports.

The company also didnâeTMt clean its equipment there after finding contamination, and didnâeTMt properly separate raw and finished products, the New York Times adds. Yuck.

The recall of the Peanut Corporation of America products has now been expanded to include everything produced at the plant since Jan. 1, 2007, Dow Jones says. The recall had previously included products dating back to last July. (For the latest on the investigation and recalls, see check this page on the FDAâeTMs Web site.)

ItâeTMs not clear how much food from the expanded recall is still sitting around, considering how old it is. âeceWe donâeTMt have a good idea right now in terms of how much of that product is still out there,âe said Stephen Sundlof, director of the FDAâeTMs food safety center. âeceIt may have largely been consumed.âe

Peanut Corporation of America said it wasnâeTMt aware of any illnesses involving the older products. âeceWe have been devastated by this, and we have been working around the clock with the FDA to ensure any potentially unsafe products are removed from the market immediately,âe said Stewart Parnell, the companyâeTMs president.

Meantime, legislators are looking for ways to beef up food inspections amid reports of significant gaps. The New York Times reports that Rep. Bart Stupak, chairman of the House subcommittee on investigations, and two other legislators yesterday proposed legislation that would tighten safety rules for food makers and gave the FDA more power and money to conduct inspections.
